It wasn’t a matter of if it would happen, it was a matter of when. During Universal’s panel at Cinemacon in Las Vegas, Vin Diesel announced that the next installment in the Fast & Furious franchise will be released on April 14, 2017. Ever since the fourth entry back in 2009, audiences have been treated to a new installment from this franchise every other year. This has resulted in each film outgrossing its predecessor. With Furious Seven, the franchise hit a new high.
The recent entry ended up being the first film of the franchise to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. So far, the film has grossed $1.15 billion worldwide. Universal will continue making these films until they begin to see diminishing returns. For now the returns keep getting higher and higher with each entry. Therefore, an eighth installment in the franchise was all but confirmed. Now that we have confirmation, fans of the series can begin eagerly anticipating the next entry.
All that was revealed about the next entry was the release date. An official title was not revealed. With the titles of the previous entries varying from Fast Five to Fast & Furious 6 to the most recent Furious Seven, it is hard to determine what the official title for the next entry will be. Fast & Furious 8 will have to do for now.
We also do not know who will be directing the film. Having James Wan return will prove to be tricky since he is now moving on to direct The Conjuring 2, scheduled for release in 2016. Bringing back Justin Lin for the next entry will also be difficult since he is working on Star Trek 3, which is also scheduled for 2016. It will be interesting to see if the studio brings back Wan or Lin, or decides to go with a new director.
In the end, the Fast & Furious franchise continues to be one of the most profitable franchises in the industry. With a new installment officially announced, it looks like the franchise will be continuing that growth. While fans are still enjoying the latest entry of the series in theaters, it is nice to have something to look forward to now as well.
Fast & Furious 8 is set to be released in North America on April 14, 2017.
