'Pacific Rim 2', 'Warcraft' and 'The Mummy' Get New Release Dates

Universal has updated their future slate of upcoming films with several of them getting new release dates. It has been revealed that the next chapter in the Fast & Furious series will be released on April 14, 2017. Meanwhile, the second and third films in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise will be released on February 10, 2017 and February 9, 2018. Now, we get to the recent updates to their upcoming films.

First of all Pacific Rim 2 is being pushed back from April 7, 2017. This is an obvious move considering the fact that the studio recently scheduled Fast & Furious 8 to open a week after that date. The sequel, also directed by Guillermo del Toro, will now be released on August 4, 2017. The first weekend of August has become a popular date ever since the great success of Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened in the first weekend of August last year. Pacific Rim 2 should fare well with that date.

Meanwhile, Warcraft has also been pushed back again from March 11, 2016. The video game adaptation, directed by Duncan Jones, was initially set to open in December 2015. However, it was forced to vacate that date in order to get away from Star Wars. Now, it must once again leave its latest date in order to stay clear of the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Warcraft will now be releasing on June 10, 2016. In its new date the film will be releasing alongside fellow video game adaptation Uncharted, along with The Conjuring 2 and Now You See Me 2.

Universal also updated the scheduling of their monster films. The studio is planning to build a shared universe with their monster films. The first film to launch this universe will be The Mummy. The film has been pushed back from June 24, 2016 to March 24, 2017. The studio has also pushed back the release of its second film set to be apart of this universe. The film remains untitled. It has been pushed back from April 21, 2017 to March 30, 2018. Building shared cinematic universes is now the big trend among film studios. It remains to be seen whether Universal will be able to pull off this shared universe. With the first two films being delayed, the studio will have more time to work on executing this new franchise.

Finally, the studio revealed it will release the thriller Mena on January 6, 2017. The film reunites director Doug Liman with actor Tom Cruise after Edge of Tomorrow. The thriller tells the story of Trans World Airlines pilot Barry Seal (Cruise) who became a drug smuggler in the 1980s and ended up being recruited by the CIA to provide intelligence. This certainly sounds like an interesting film from both Liman and Cruise. It is definitely different from their last collaboration, which was a sci-fi action film. Overall, these are all the changes to the future slate of films by Universal. The studio definitely has a lot of films audiences can look forward to.
