Trailer Talk - 'Black Mass'

Black Mass is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) from a screenplay written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow). The film is based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob written by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. It tells the true story of Whitey Bulger, a Boston crime boss. Johnny Depp will be portraying Bulger. Other members of the cast include Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sienna Miller, Jesse Plemons, David Harbour, Adam Scott, Dakota Johnson, and Corey Stoll.

“In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.”

The first trailer for Black Mass will definitely leave a lasting impression on viewers. The trailer expertly conveys its style and tone through this trailer. The one scene it focuses on between Johnny Depp and David Harbour is excellent. Depp has really making a lot of missteps as of late. His recent films Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence, and the recently released Mortdecai all turned out to be not only disappointing films, but also underperformed at the box office.

With Black Mass, the actor looks to be making a comeback by taking on a dramatic role where he can showcase his talent. The make-up looks great, with the receding hairline and the coloured contacts. Depp really conveys a strong intimidating quality in the trailer that makes him feel scary. It is going to be exciting seeing him in such a role. Director Scott Cooper is known for bringing out the best performances from his actors. Crazy Heart featured one of the best performances from Jeff Bridges, while Out of the Furnace featured incredible performances from Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, and Woody Harrelson.

Let’s hope Cooper is able to bring the best out of Depp. Finally, the film seems to feature an incredible cast with many big names. So, there is no doubt we will be seeing some top-notch performances. Overall, Black Mass looks like a film fans of the cast or crime dramas should definitely check out. This fantastic trailer has made Black Mass one of most anticipated films of 2015.

Black Mass is set to be released in North America on September 18, 2015.
