Warner Bros. Shifts Future Schedule of 'The LEGO Movie' Franchise

Warner Bros. has begun to build a huge animated franchise from The LEGO Movie, which was released in February 2014 and grossed $468.7 million worldwide. This franchise includes a direct sequel along with three spin-off films. The studio recently shifted the release dates of these upcoming films.

Ninjago was originally slated to hit theaters in September 2016. However, the film has been pushed back and will now be released on September 22, 2017. This means the first film we will see from the franchise will be the untitled LEGO Batman spin-off film. The film was originally slated for a May 2017 release but has now been moved up. The film will now be released on February 10, 2017. This release date is similar to The LEGO Movie, which was also released in February. Finally, the sequel, officially titled The LEGO Movie Sequel, will be released on May 18, 2018.

While Ninjago and The LEGO Movie Sequel face no competition and have their dates to themselves for now, The LEGO Batman Movie will be facing competition from romantic drama The Mountain Between Us starring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike. Meanwhile, writer Drew Pearce and actor Jason Segel will be developing another spin-off titled The Billion Brick Race. This film did not receive an official release date, but a post on Twitter from Pearce reveals the film will be released sometime in 2019. Overall, it seems the studio is dedicated on building a long-lasting sustainable franchise over the next couple of years from the success of The LEGO Movie.

The LEGO Batman Movie is set to be released in North America on February 10, 2017. Ninjago is set to be released in North America on September 22, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel is set to be released in North America on May 18, 2018.
